Top 5 News Sources

With so much going on in the world and in this country, it's important to stay up-to-date and in the know on all things "news." Making sure that the news we're receiving is as unbias as possible is a huge part of staying properly informed. In order to share the ways in which I stay up-to-date, I've included my top 5 news sources below.

1.) The Skimm

The Skimm, is a perhaps less popular news source that comes with a wealth of information. It provides you with a daily morning summary of everything you need to know once you sign up. This allows you to start your day with relevant and timely updates on everything happening in the world.

2.) Buzzfeed

Buzzfeed, being tailored to a younger demographic, often offers a different spin or viewpoint on things happening here and now. While it may not always be unbias, it does allow for younger people to start conversations and be aware of what is trending and being talked about. It's also a very interactive source, making it stand out a bit from some of its competitors.

3.) Snapchat

Snapchat is a social media app first and a news outlet second, I know, but Snapchat offers many different takes on many of the same issues. On Snapchat, you're able to open The Daily Mail, CNN, NBC, etc just to take a quick look at what they have to say. While it is very short and summarized news, they often link their posts to articles that allow you to follow up and learn more later on. Being right on your phone, it's also extremely accessible news.

4.) Time Magazine

While Time may not seem like an obvious first choice, I get automatic news notifications to my phone whenever a new story or post is released. It may not always provide an in-depth or unbias version of a story, but it does allow me to stay in-the-know on what's happening and when it's happening. This way, I can go and do my own research later about any one story or topic that jumps out at me.

5.) Huffington Post

The Huffington Post, a renowned and popular news source, also provides some good reading. It provides a lot of in-depth information on a variety of different areas of news. It's also a great source to keep up with since it is so widely viewed and talked about.

Recap and Review

After an entire semester of blogging for my Media Law and Literacy, I've learned a bit about the power of blogging. Blogging is essentially a form of citizen journalism and allows everyday citizens to act as gatekeeepers. It allows anyone to share their knowledge or creative ideas to entertain, persuade, and inform others. While I may not continue blogging like this in the future, it's given me a better appreciation of what blogging can do and how important it is, especially in the world of social media. So many different avenues of sharing information have become available since technology has involved so drastically but this one sticks out. Its completely customizable and usable for everyone. I hope that the people who use blogging use it for the right reasons. While it can be used to spread false information, it can also be used to spread truth and creativity. It shouldn't be stifled and we should be promoting this form of freedom of speech.

Whistleblowers: The Heroes Behind Bars

After learning more about key media law terms and concepts, I realized that one stuck out to me. The concept of a whistleblower, while I knew what one was before, was a bit foreign to me and I didn't realize just how important and close to home they can hit. With Julian Assange being the main news story these days, I found it important to familiarize myself with not only his story, but the terms associated with the current news cycle. Whistleblowers have made waves, especially in United States history. In a lot of people's eyes, they're heroes. They serve the people by uncovering and revealing injustice, dishonesty, and wrongdoing. While that is a good thing, especially for the American public, it often means that we lose faith in our elected officials. The concept and threat of a whistleblower hold them to higher standards and keeps the public informed so that we can help to hold them to those standards. Some of history's most famous whistleblowers include Mark...

Archetypes: A Different Kind of Social Media

Recently I've been researching different kinds of lesser known social media and websites allowing people to connect with one another to see what kinds of things are out there. I came across something recently called Archetypes and it sparked my interest.  To get started on Archetypes, you first take a quiz that determines exactly what archetype you are. The options seem a bit endless with 12 different archetypes to end up with but if your's isn't quite clear-cut, they do tell you which of the 12 you're a mix of. The descriptions of the archetypes are super helpful as well since you can just scroll over them and get a better understanding of what each one is.  After you receive the results of your quiz, you're able to read stories related to your archetypes and even shop for perfumes, spritzes, and candles that are meant to be compatible with you. The site is still under construction and they're working on adding more features but when they do, you sh...
